My Voice Experience
For several years, I was known by one BBC presenter as, "Hillary Clinton." Seriously, this presenter didn't know my name...she could only remember that I had voiced-over excerpts of Hillary Clinton's memoir, "Living History," for BBC World Service Radio news. So this presenter simply decided to call me Hillary.
While my voice does not sound at all like Hillary Clinton's (nor for that matter, like Madonna's nor Rachel Corrie's nor Eleanor Roosevelt's) I did play all these roles at some point for BBC World Service News. While working for the BBC in London, I was often asked to record excerpts of books and plays for producers to use in their newscasts when covering a story. So when Senator Clinton's widely-anticipated tome was released, and when the BBC couldn't book Hillary to read it herself, they booked me.
Now that I am living in New York, I still do work for the BBC as a freelance feature reporter. I regularly record segments from fascinating locations. For example, I recently did a feature story about New York sanitation workers and got to ride along a route with two fantastic people, picking up trash. It was one of my favorite gigs ever.
Along with my BBC work, I have narrated some great projects, like "Wild Pennsylvania." It's a beautiful documentary about, well, you guessed it, the wild places of Pennsylvania. It was an official selection of the Black Bear Film Festival in Milford, PA. I had to learn many things to narrate this film, including the complicated pronunciations of several plant species! I have also hosted/narrated industrial videos, including one that shows Pfizer's vision of the future of healthcare. The producers asked me to make my voice slightly robotic-sounding for the piece. It turned out well. Now, when I want to freak out my husband, I start talking like that around the house.
