Voice Description

Although I can speak very little of any foreign language, I can imitate most of them extremely well. I have been a professional actor, working mostly on Merseyside - near Liverpool - in England; I was voted best male actor for two years on the run before I left England and lived in the Channel Islands. Whilst there I worked for local radio, presenting late night shows that required an intimate, relaxed and friendly voice. I can be cheery, zany and moody, depending on what is required. My talent for accents means that I can convincingly convey what is required without lampooning, but I can also do this, if required! Recently, thanks to Voice 123, I have worked for Voicetoons, creating a range of accents to be used on an interactive service on the Internet.

My Voice Experience

I began my professional acting career back in 1981 when I joined Wirral Youth Theatre. This was a community based theatre company on Merseyside, near Liverpool that toured local special schools, putting on shows for the children in attendance. The need was for a lead who was 'talented in voices' I often played the villain or the dame, and always interacted with the audience. Together with some colleagues, we formed 'Wishbone Theatre Company' and worked hard to produce productions that were challenging and 'different' for the local communities. 'Breezeblock Park', 'The Elephant Man', 'Blue-Remembered Hills' and 'Romeo and Juliet (!)' were amongst our successes.
I moved to the Channel Islands and continued to work in dramatic productions, most notably in 'Educating Rita' for which I received extremely good reviews. I worked on local radio, on a late night show, which was very well received. Part of this show saw me reading ghost stories just after the midnight hour, something which drew great comments from the community. I also produced a series of voiceovers for various commercials which were broadcast throughout transmissions.
Presently I am working as a teacher in a local school, teaching History, my other great passion.

My Training

I studied Drama at Liverpool University, graduating in May 1992 with a Honours degree. During my time at college, I received intensive training in voice projection and stage presence. I appeared in various productions, most notably 'The Red of the Sun' which was reviewed in the Liverpool Echo and received very positive comments.
My work as a teacher means that I have to constantly use my voice in a variety of situations and, especially during assemblies, I tell stories and engage the pupils with a variety of different accents and styles that amuses yet informs them. during lessons I often 'playact' as I strongly believe that by engaging pupils through lively stories they develop an interest in history that will motivate them to study further.

Additional Skills

I am married with three children - all girls - one of whom is a teenage, so i know all about what is and what isn't 'in'!
My interests are very varied. I love films and have a wide interest in many genre types.
I've worked in many and varied types of job, but teaching has been the most fulfiling. although at heart I am still an actor, the knowledge that I am actually doing some good for some of the children in my care is a very humbling thought. Because of my empathy with children, my natural story-telling ability transports them into the fictionalised worlds of the many tales I tell. I'm sure the same could be said about my voice overs! Just give me a try!
I feel very privileged to do what I do and am grateful for the natural talents I have.
