My Voice Experience
As a sixth grader, I wrote, produced and voiced all the characters in my recorded book reports. At sixteen, I practiced editing in my home studio, which led to my first radio job in Los Angeles (1964) Twenty two years, and lots of radio and TV stations later, I would have the opportunity to voice some of the classic nationally broadcast infomercials (Blu Blocker Shades, Blue Jeans Millionaire, Cigarest, The Helsinki Formula, Abdominizer, etc.). A few years later, Sr. VP at an ad agency in Orange Co, CA., where our company set So. Calif. car dealers sales records with our customized radio, tv and web campaigns. Many newscasts, many corp videos and lot's of radio spots for more than 40 years have given me the ability to write, voice and produce successful campaigns for you!
My Training
Since childhood, I have studied the voices of others on radio and tv and eventually trained as a singer. By 10th grade I had a singing group that toured on weekends. I delighted in winning several speech awards in High School useing a blank sheet of paper in place of the mandatory note cards. The rush from learning to ad-lib was the most fun. Throughout my broadcast and public speaking career, I've learned to draw in an audience, hold them close and make them feel comfortable. I've also had the joy of teaching others to sing and speak with ease, and savor the great experience of performing.
My Studio Equipment
I like to keep it simple, because most producers prefer to do any "finish" work to their standard or needs.
So, my Shure SM5-B is processed only by a tube pre-amp and goes directly into a Delta sound card flat (no eq). Because my primary job is audio editing for broadcast, you can be confident that the quality is there. So are the processing bells and whistles if need be.
After so many years in radio and recording, I confess that I am the typical pack rat; still clinging to artifacts of audio devices forgotten by some but cherished by those who appreciate their design and function. I had to smile when I just looked up and noticed my DVD burner sits on the same shelf with a 1914 Columbia Grafonola!
Additional Skills
I can do "pretty" and "slick" presentations. I can produce "funny" and "cute", but I have learned nothing sells a car, or asprin, like a simple message, to the right audience at the right time. I have learned bombastic music and laser cannon effects can become a crutch. A dry voice that know's where it's going beats the rest everytime, handsdown!
Want to cut through the clutter on the radio? Want a TV viewer to remember your message instead of your stunt? Trust those who've done it and have proven it works. Those 400 cars sold in a weekend at a single L.A. dealership didn't just happen; it was planned!
