Accents, Impersonations, Characters and Dialects

Southern, Midwest accents

Some Texans accuse me of having no accent, or a midwest accent. While in Chicago a slight drawl was noticed. By the time I got to New York, my Southern accent was so thick, I hardly recognized myself! Actually, despite the influence of crossing the Mason Dixen line, I can control my accent.

My Husband's people live in West Texas, and accuse me of having a Fort Worth accent.
So, I feel I can offer either a Southern or a midwest accent. Of course, you can ask for a Fort Worth accent, but since I was raised between Fort Worth and Dallas, I won't know how to do it.

My Voice Experience

I have Read books for the NTRB (North Texas Reading for the Blind) and was chosen to read novels and special projects such as reading a special inspirational book to comfort people dying of AIDS.

I wrote and performed radio commercials, as part of Ad Campaigns I designed and ran which also included newspaper ads, posters, and special on site promotions involving cartoon characters I designed, built and trained actors for.

One of my favorite jobs was as a special character for Six Flags Over Texas. I played the part of "Aunt Addie Jean" An old farm woman who came to Six Flags with her brother "Uncle Bub" to open and run "Aunt Addie Jean and Uncle Bub's Back Porch Cafe" Of course, nobody ever saw Uncle Bub because he was always "gone fishin". I made up stories about him and for answers to guests questions. I welcomed and cared for all Six Flags guests and employees. I also memorized the substantial menu and acted as a barker n front of the restaurant. Often irate and unhappy guests were brought to Aunt Addie to calm and brighten. She used to say "We'll sit ya' down, cool ya' off, and fill ya' so full of good home cookin' we'll have to ROLL ya' out the back door!"

In the off season, I did phone sales and performed as Aunt Addie for customer service over the phone to placate irate customers.

My Training

I have been called a natural talent. Whenever the need arose I could shift voices, or moods immediately, while I read cold. I was born to be dramatic. I often learned on the job.

Texas Woman's University
I went to college, thinking I would become a teacher. After a year and a half at TWU, taking child development, drama, speech, Spanish, art, etc,I remembered that teachers do more homework than their students. So I quit college and became a stewardess.

American Airlines
I was a Stewardess for American Airlines back in the days of prop jobs and new jets, and no jet ways. C.R. Smith was still in charge and I often credit AAL training for teaching me public relations skills I've used in all subsequent jobs. A Spanish speaking base opened up which would mean traveling into Mexico and reading in Spanish to the passengers. I was given the PA written in Spanish to read. When I was finished, the instructor said I read it fluently! When she discovered that I didn't understand her remarks in Spanish, in English, she asked me if I understood anything I had read. "No Ma'am", I replied. I guess the only part of my college class in Spanish I had absorbed was pronunciation. I was then qualified as a Spanish speaker.

University of Texas at Arlington
I entered UTA for one course only. A graduate art course for figure drawing. A killer flu bug hit my family and caused me to quit. The professor was so good that what I had learned about drawing the human body greatly improved my cartooning which is what I wanted from that course.

Fantasy Creations Corporation
CEO, President, Designer, Trainer, or "a Cartoonist run amuck!"
When a car dealer asked me to set up an ad campaign, in my spare time, I did some research, and successfully created his campaign from determining the target market, writing a proposal, to writing and performing radio commercials and writing and illustrating newspaper ads. I painted the client's store front windows, and hired my own cartoon characters to do a kick off promotion. Within the 2 week campaign, he had to order more trucks twice, and was over stocked with used cars or trade ins when it was over.

Exec Express II Airline,
Base Manager
In later years, I was a Station manager for a small commuter airline which meant I was office manager, ticket agent, bag handler, ramper, FBO (maintained the fueling station and put fuel in the planes) , Weather observer, radio operator, and liason for the company with CEOs, Presidents, plant managers, the Airport board, the FAA, and passengers. They moved me into their sales department as a sales manager covering 3 states, where I solved problems, and worked with city planners, chambers of commerce, travel agencies and more corporations.

National Weather Observer (required for my Exec Express II station)
I learned weather observation from the National Weather Service, a 6 week course, condensed into two and a half days of intensive training, and began my job as a station manager the next day. Two days later, I was tested by the NWS rep who drove to my station to give me the test. Meanwhile, I was being trained as a Ticket agent by another base manager. After the test, I came back downstairs to continue my on the job training as a ticket agent. Then the FAA showed up 2 weeks later, and I again, through research and manuals, was learning on the job how to set up and maintain a fueling station. The pilots taught me how to fuel the planes.

Six Flags over Texas
I went to work for Six Flags as a ticket seller, moved into phone sales, and then became the first "Aunt Addie". I was assigned a basic bio, and given a costume. I learned on the job, again and added more to the bio, made up stories, helped out in the kitchen, served the customers, and lured guests into the restaurant, where we fed them and I entertained them.

Six flags also had me design other characters (costumes, bios, scripts, hiring, training) for other areas in the park in my spare time.

I retired.

My Studio Equipment

ASG usb microphone, macbook pro laptop with 10.5.2 OS which includes Garage Band, iMovie, and is DVD-RDL burn capable, and a small sound proofed room.

Additional Skills

Audio Book Reader, Phone sales, Cartoon Character Actor, Cartoon Character Actor Trainer, Customer Service, Public Relations, Sales both retail and wholesale, Advertising, Costume Designer, Cartoonist

I trained actors to speak as characters while in costume
For instance, one of my 12 characters was "Jolly Snowman" (named by Sonic patrons). He was performing for 8 hours and being interviewed on the radio throughout the day. The interviewer and his radio audience had no idea that they were listening to 3 different actors throughout the day.

wrote and performed radio commercials that played during "drive time"
