My Voice Experience
"You should be a radio announcer." At the time, I didn't pay a great deal of attention to those who told me that, and I wound up pursuing other avenues, teaching English as a second language, translating, proofreading, editing. I rediscovered recently my talent for character reading by volunteering for parts in presentations at my church. Everyone appears to be impressed by my intonation, projection, and characterization, whether in a narrative role in a P.G. Wodehouse play or reading excerpts from the speeches of Martin Luther King. Besides, I simply have a good voice, with a big range.
My Training
I have a bachelor's degree from the University of Washington in English Literature and, under the university's General Studies program, in teaching English as a second language. I am also a singer, having performed for a number of years with the Seattle Choral Company, directed by Freddie Coleman, and currently perform choir and solo work for my church. I sing bass, tenor and sometimes alto.
My Studio Equipment
I myself don't own a recording studio, but I have a friend and close neighbor who has a studio set up primarily for song recording. He's a guitarist and singer.
Additional Skills
One thing that's important to know about me is that I'm just naturally a very good reader, so I don't need to spend time figuring out pronunciation. If there happens to be a name, for example, that I don't know how to pronounce (how many would know how to pronounce the name Jack Zduriencik when reading it for the first time?), once I learn the pronunciation, it's there. So not too many false starts. Generally I can just go right through. As an editor, I have quite a bit of general knowledge that's useful when reading.
