My Voice Experience
I have been interested in voice-over work, even before I knew the meaning of the term voice-over. It started in junior high school, when I realized I could entertain my schoolmates, (especially girls), by imitating cartoon characters and famous personalities. My classmates would often request certain voices, and I would have to learn them quickly to impress them. I didnt realize it at the time, but that experience helped me understand how my voice works, and most importantly, how to control my voice to get it to do what I wanted.
As I became older, and my voice became deeper, local radio DJs started asking me to record ads and station IDs for them. Around that time, I started working for a computer game company, Berkeley Systems (creators of AFTER DARK FLYING TOASTERS and YOU DONT KNOW JACK). Since they had an in-house sound booth, they would often have me come in and record different voices for their prototype games. I was hooked!
In the mid-90s, I was a bass player in a band called Limp, signed to Fat Wreck Chords. In 2000, we came to Japan on tour and played the NK Hall. I enjoyed my time in Japan so much, that I moved here in 2002. Shortly after moving to Japan, I hooked up with an old friend and label mate, Ken Yokoyama (guitarist for the band Hi Standard), and joined his solo project. In the five years I was with him, I recorded two albums, two DVDs, four MTV videos, toured all over Japan, and played many memorable shows and festivals, including headliner stages at Fuji Rock Festival, Rock in Japan, Count Down Japan, Rising Sun Festival and a sold out show at the Nippon Budokan). While in the studio recording albums, Ken and I would often do skits, which would require me to do many different voices.
My experience with both bands has made me very comfortable with working in a studio and being in front of a microphone. I have an easy time working with producers and take directions well. Now that I am no longer in the band, I have quite a bit of time to focus on my dream of becoming a voice actor.
