My Voice Experience
"You must be a DJ..."
I can't tell you how often I hear this. Cliff jumping, ordering pizza, or answering the phone at work - I get it all the time.
The truth is, I was a DJ at two radio stations while I was in college back in the late 90's (WICB in Ithaca and the now defunct 107.7 WEMR Endless Mountains Rock in Tunkhannock, PA).
My voice had always been a tool that I used for fun, whether on the air, making up voices to entertain friends and family, or mimicking accents while watching movies or television.
It wasn't until I was working in my last job at a Human Resources Consulting firm called APT in Darien, CT that I realized that I should never have stopped marketing my voice. Clients would call in and comment that I should be the next "movie guy" (assuming they meant Don "the Voice" LaFontaine). When APT began screening actors to use in hiring package videos, they asked me to provide voices for callers, and pose as an employee leaving voicemail messages. I thought perhaps they were using me just to avoid paying an actor, but was proven wrong when I was compensated extra for my work.
So now here I am, thinking I need to get my voice out there. I will be new to the field, and I am eager to work with whomever is looking for a fresh new voice.
My Training
I have a Bachelor's Degree in Speech Commnunication from Ithaca College. While there, I was a radio DJ for the college station. I also did voice-over and on-screen work for seven student film-makers. (I had a friend who was obsessed with seals, and I was the voice of Tom, his toy seal in three stop-motion animation features).
I have also worked as a DJ for the now defunct 107.7 WEMR Endless Mountains Rock in Tunkhannock, PA.
I also have a Master's Degree in Higher Education, and I currently teach public speaking (and other communication courses) at Sacred Heart University.
I still get the DJ question....
