My Voice Experience
I have been doing VO work professionally since 2005 and love it. My home base is just outside of Dallas, TX (Go Cowboys). I am happily married to my High School sweetheart with whom I have 3 children (all boys). We share our home with a tuxedo cat (Socks) and a total goober of an Airedale Terrier, Toby.
My voice over career began with online software demos and slowly progressed to other types of online courseware and website tutorials. By 2006 I decided to try doing voice over and video work full time. My customer base and portfolio began to expand into voice mail, phone prompts, corporate presentations (flash / powerPoint), my first radio spot, and even a character voice for my first BIG name, T-Mobile (online fav-5 promo). I even did an audio book or two. My background in software development / programming gave me a niche or an 'in' with the technology folks.
I returned to full-time software development in 2007, however my VO business had really expanded (now on the side) and was allowing me to gain valuable experience from diverse projects. I began voicing a little television (a Christian TV broadcast that airs over GodTV) doing show open / close and also product spots. The amount of radio work also increased, as did much of the web video work, allowing me to become better grounded in both non-broadcast and broadcast deliverables. Through direction and customer feedback I felt that year was the year I was able to really 'find my voice', and fine tune it into the 'voice' that I use professionally today.
In addition to growing as a voice talent, this time period also afforded me the opportunity to leverage my writing skills and begin dabbling in writing copy. it started with a few customers asking me to modify existing copy or create new copy from a rough draft. I began to see that many customers were in need of this type of added service (especially the smaller guys with limited marketing budgets or staff), and they were very excited to know that I could provide script assistance. It is a great service to upsell when bidding for the project, and I believe I was given preference on some projects due to the extra service offering. It wasn't long before I was writing or enhancing copy / scripts comfortably.
I have had the great fortune (blessing) of voicing, scripting, recording, and producing both non-broadcast and broadcast audio. For many of the small-midsize folks out there it's good to find a one-stop-shop.
I am so thankful for the opportunity and privelage to work in this industry, and I look forward to using my voice in whatever capacity God has destined for me to use it.
