Voice Description

My natural speaking voice is deep but not "window-rattling" deep. It is soothing but not boring. Over the last 28 years, I've been able to hone my voice over skills in variety of ways. I have developed a "news" voice as the news director for Colorado West Broadcasting.
I also have a voice for sports broadcasting and play-by-play. When it comes to commercial copy, I am capable of tailoring my delivery and pacing for any product, service or medium. In addition to my training as a journalist, copywriter and vocal specialist, I have experience in theater and music as tenor soloist.

Accents, Impersonations, Characters and Dialects

Accents include; British, Scottish, Irish, Mexican, Russian, Indian, Asian, as well as dialects and accents from most regions in the United States.

Characterizations include several celebrities such as,
John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sling Blade, Bill Clinton, Nixon, Alfred Hitchcock, Mae West,
Sean Connery. The number of characters are limited only by my imagination and willingness to stretch a little.

My Voice Experience

I've worked in broadcasting since 1982 in news, sports and commercial production. I've been the News and Sports Director at Colorado West Broadcasting for 11 years. I began training my voice and honing my reading skills back in high school by reading everything out loud from the sports pages of the LA Times to the back of a shampoo bottle. Over time, I learned the importance of timing,
rythym, pacing, inflection and emphasis. It always helps to have a well-written script but if the person interpreting the words doesn't have the proper training and experience, the copy simply becomes jumbled letters on a page. Some of the recordings I've done over the years include straight reads for vocational training
videos and numerous radio and television commercials. I've also been called upon to create character voices for countless radio ads, the most memorable being a Cheech and Chong ad for a ski and snowboard shop in Vail, Colorado. One commercial for Buzz's Boots and Boards turned into a successful, popular and long-running campaign.

My Training

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Broadcast Journalism from the University of Southern California. I have also taken and completed courses in newswriting through the Colorado Broadcaster's Association and commercial copywriting taught by Dan O'Day. I have training and experience in radio and stage theater. I am a regular tenor soloist in my church and have performed the National Anthem several times before large crowds. I have won over 120 awards combined from the Associated Press and the Colorado Broadcaster's Association for excellence in news and sports broadcasting as well as commercial production.

My Studio Equipment

In my news studio I use an Audioarts R-16 mixer with an Electrovoice microphone. In the main studio I have access to a 32 channel mixer and limited experience with
Adobe Audition.

Additional Skills

I take great pride in writing copy that not only communicates a message to attention-challenged listeners but also connects with them on some level. One thing I detest as a broadcaster and as an active and critical listener is speaking down to your audience. Avoid inane, mindless, useless information like, "Joe's Hardware, we've been in business for 32 years. Located at highway 324. For all your hardware needs..." You only get one chance to get your message across. Make it count.
