Voice Description

I am a coal-country farmboy who discovered a joy for vocal impersonations at an early age. My natural voice is reminiscent of a military enlistee, with the slight characteristic twang of a Marine. I can range from a toddler (Howie Mandel's 'Bobby' character is one I can mimic) to a grumpy old man (the one without his teeth in...). I can speak from depth, and be authoritative ('young man, i'll not tell you again'). I can portray any emotion needed, frankly. Some of my favorite voices are the closed throat tenor squeak (remember Glomer from the 'Punky Brewster' cartoon?) and the good 'ol boy harrumphing through a tirade (think Earl Pitts). I also can read/speak in a broadcast cadence like a newscaster, and I can go the other way and go for broke, 'puking' in the style of monster truck event spots.

My Voice Experience

Currently, I am voicing virtual tours for internet real estate listings, using my own gear. I have been a radio DJ/producer, as well as a TV master control operator, newscast director, producer, commercial videographer and editor. I am a professional drummer with 24 years experience, and sing as well, although my singing voice is not as experienced as my speaking voice. I have recorded to tape, to digicart, to radio cart, to mp3 and everything in between. I am computer literate, and hold a ComTIA Network+ certification. I can record for any style as long as you can describe it to me and/or provide a sample.

My Training

On the job training throughout. I learned by doing and by watching others doing it. I took a slot at a non-commercial 100-watt college radio station and used that to launch my career in broadcasting. I have been trained in the operation of most broadcasting gear- give me the manual and some time to play and consider it mastered, and I have references to prove that particular ability isn't just bragging. I trained myself to use my own stuff, and can produce clean plain voice with a -54db floor just sitting in my dining room/office. If I get a real gig I'll build a booth- material is at hand.

Additional Skills

Here is what I have: a Peavey 16FX mixer, the one with USB in/out. My laptop sees it without needing a driver. I use a CAD GXL2400, a good Peavey cable and a Toshiba laptop. I record using Adobe Audition 1.5. My preferred MO is to get a script, a word or two about styling and told what format it's needed in, with 'these' parameters etc. I have no problem cranking out multiple takes with different nuances if it means getting the client a feel for my voice, then getting a final take with what you sent back to guide me. My video production capacity is pretty limited, but I can make web-ready content pretty easily, such as video you send getting voiced and uploaded to the site you specify via FTP.
