My Voice Experience
Back in the eighties, I was a brand manager for a chain of ice-cream parlors (then a nascent concept in India). Operating on a tight promo budget, I had to resort to recording my own voice for the in-parlor promo. I was on my way...
Later, I had many a chance to lend my voice to audio-visual prsentations made during J&J's (India ops) sales conferences. (I wrote the scripts too!)
Recently, I recorded for an Indian not-for-profit organization's documentary aimed at Indians settled in the US - I had to sound Indo-American.
My Training
As a kid, I was drawn towards reading anything (repeat, anything!) aloud for as long as I could. This "gift" continued well into adolescence and adulthood, to become a passion. I would listen to the radio (as a kid) and later, watch TV and just imbibe some of the nuances of British and North American speakers of English.
Many Americans who visit India have asked me, "Did you study abroad?" I remember an incident in Sep 1985. Seated next to a middle-aged couple from Canada and indulging in some light talk, I happened to use the word "fortnight". They were downright thrilled, to say the least. The obvious question popped up, "Did you go to school in the UK?"
I have an MBA and am a corporate trainer (English is Corporate India's lingua franca). I am what one would call a self-made voice artist.
