My Voice Experience
I will always remember the first time my voice hit the airwaves. I was 19 years old, looking for an internship at a local radio station in a rural suburb west of Minneapolis.
The program director said the station was too small to offer internships, but that he was willing to put me on the payroll as a "utility man". Great.
My second day on the job, I was expecting to travel to an amatuer baseball game with the play-by-play announcer to help with stats, equipment, and anything else.
Much to my surprise, the program director informed me upon arrival that the play-by-play announcer had a conflict and wouldn't be coming to the game.
Program Director - "You've watched baseball before, right?"
Me - "Of course, I love baseball."
PD - "Well, you're doing play-by-play tonight."
Me - "By myself? I've never even been on the radio before!"
PD - "You'll figure it out."
And that was it. I scratched and clawed my way through a nine inning ball game, likely butchering the names of these poor ball players.
But it was worth it. Being thrown into the fire is the best way to learn. Since then, I've always had a passion for radio. I've also dabbled in commercial work, comedy bits, and other announcing duties.
I hope this site allows me the opportunity to expand my horizons.
And possibly make a buck or two.
My Training
