Voice Description
I'm an actor at heart, so my voice can be as deep and menacing as Darth Vader, or as brusque and commanding as a marine drill sargeant.
I'd have to say my specialty, though, is narrations for documentaries, voice mail greetings and commercials.
On Sundays at church, I get up in front of the congregation and deliver the readings in a "voice of God" style. But when I have to make a quick announcement about next week's pot luck supper, well, then I become folksy and friendly. Quick and to the point.
What makes me a unique talent is that I'm a speech writer too, so I care deeply about how words sound, not how they appear on paper. My speeches have been deivered by senior executives in the U.S. government as well as corporate executives in the private sector. Truth is, they're not so much speeches as scripts. Movie scripts, radio scripts and so on. To call them speeches gives them an air of formality and stuffiness. That's not my style. But when it comes to doing voice-over work, well, I can adapt to pretty much whatever a client wants.

Accents, Impersonations, Characters and Dialects
As someone who spent his formative years in New York, I can deliver a New Yawk accent that'll knock Tony Soprano's socks off. You know the accent I mean. The gum-cracking, street-wise tough guy in the Bronx. It's the kind of impersonation that dares to ask "You wanna mess with me?"
On the other hand, I can be soft and cuddly as well, like Barry White (God rest his soul and his voice). My voice comes across deep, thick and dripping like honey.
As far as foreign accents go, I can do a killer West Indian tongue. "Yeah, mon." I've got the bona fides to sound authentic, having been born in Trinidad.
My regular speaking voice, though, sounds completely American. And yet, I can also deliver impersonations of Japanese, Hispanic and British natives.
My Voice Experience
I got my first gig in the 80s doing a voice over in college for a friend's documentary. He sought me out one day after listening to me narrate a book for a bind friend. That's where I caught the bug. From there, it was minor projects like public announcements over loudspeakers, calling out numbers on Bingo night, that sort of thing.
Like many voice talents, I've had people say "You know, you should be in radio." I would just smile and say "oh thank you," but now I'm actually doing something about it. The time has come to see what kind of name I can make for myself in this highly competitive field.
My Training
I have a bachelor's degree in English literature (so not only do I know who Beowulf is, I can probably imitate him).
As a print journalist, I've done one or two stand-ups for television, but that's about as close as I ever came to TV, unless you count the times I impersonated the weather man ("And we've got a cold front working its way across the Plains...")
While I can't lay claim to a master's degree or decades of experience with voice overs, there have been enough speaking projects to convince me that this is for me.
My Studio Equipment
Don't own studio equipment, but am willing to travel to your studio in my area.
Additional Skills
What's important to know is how quickly I can master a project. You're not looking at ten takes with me. Tell me what you want, and how you want it done, and it's done. I mean, I've been in the communications industry as a writer for over 20 years. I know what looks good on paper. And I know what sounds like Mozart to the ear.
I'm a complete professional. I won't say I can do something if I can't. You will be hiring a guy who can deliver.
