Voice Description

I have a flexible voice; warm and fun feels most natural to me, and I sing in the baritone range. I am currently pursuing training as a marriage and family therapist, and can make my voice gentle and soothing. However, I also enjoy the rise and fall of narration, and anywhere from quick and professional to deep and inviting presents an enjoyable challenge.

Accents, Impersonations, Characters and Dialects

I enjoy performing a wide range of accents. I am American, with a Midwestern accent, but can dip into other accents from Georgia, Texas, California, "generic" New York, Minnesota, and a Southern U.S. accent.

I also appreciate and perform other English dialects: British accents from Scotland, Ireland, and a neutral King's English accent, as well as accents from Australia and New Zealand; I can achieve greater local specificity by listening to and imitating native speakers.

Foreign English accents in my repertoire include Spanish, French, German, Russian, Kenyan, and Pakistani/Indian. I am currently working to improve my South African English accent.

I am not fluent in Spanish, but can read it out loud with little or no trace of an American accent. I am willing to work hard to try this with other languages as well.

My Voice Experience

"You have a great radio voice," my friends tell me. "You should read audiobooks. You should find work doing voice-overs." That sounds amazing, I say back. I would love that. But I don't know where to start. One day a friend told me about Voice123.

The son of two linguists, I have always been drawn toward linguistics (the art or science, depending on perspective, of how language is put together and utilized by humans). I have enjoyed picking up bits and pieces of other languages throughout my life. I like to make people laugh with my different voices, and character work appeals to me. I love reading out loud, noting the nuances of personality and context, and adjusting my voice to match, to set up a cadence that draws the listener in.

That said, offering my voice as a commodity of talent is a bit of a new step. I would like to gain more experience in the field, and perhaps become more than just one of over 2 million hopefuls.

My Training

I have been part of a group for the last 2 and a half years that reads novels out loud in an informal setting, and enjoy imitating actors and voice over stereotypes.

I performed minor parts in a number of school plays growing up, and took several singing lessons in high school. I did very well in my college Intro to Communication Honors class speeches; each of us in the class had five to do, in both individual and group formats. However, I have no professional training in doing voice overs.

My Studio Equipment

With little experience in this field, this is the area of which I have the least knowledge. I have friends that do this sort of thing, however, and will update this section upon learning more from them.

Additional Skills

I have a knack for languages, particularly when it comes to pronunciation. I am a good mimic and a fast learner, and try to approximate native accents as quickly as possible.

Part of this may be a result of spending 15 years of my life in Southeast Asia, surrounded by both foreigners and speakers of English from such places as the United States, England, Northern Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and South Africa. I never learned another language, but I am familiar with and can pronounce sounds completely foreign to English.

I also enjoy beatboxing, though I am not very practiced at it.
