My Voice Experience
After singing at both high school and collegiate levels, I moved on to an entirely new career. In 1993 I began my professional training as a military communications specialist and was assigned as one of the primary radio operators in my unit. My duties included talking with higher headquarters, adjacent units, support units, and overhead aircraft. Clarity and concision were paramount in that duty.
Throughout my military career, I have run into other soldiers that I hadn't seen in years and they can recognize me without seeing me by the sound of my voice. Many have referred to me as "The Voice" when they try to describe to others who may have worked with me in the past. If they did work with me but can't remember my name or what I looked like, that title brings me to the forefront of their memory.
On my last tour I was tasked for a given time to be the liaison from my unit to a higher command. Part of my job was to make daily presentations and verbal briefings to the commanding officer and his staff on my unit's progress out in the combat zone. I was one of the more notable speakers assigned there due to my ability to project my voice throughout the room, my articulation, clarity, and being able to correctly pronounce the names of native people of importance, villages and geographic regions in the combat theater. That last part actually makes it easier for the personnel in the room digest the information.
Over the past 3 years I have had more people than I can remember, both civilian and military, inquire if I work as a professional speaker, radio host or voice actor. When civilians have asked about my radio experience I tell them that "Technically, yes, I do talk on the radio-mainly for calling in mission and/or resupply requests, MEDEVAC missions and airborne operations." Those in the military who have inquired, have asked if I ever did voice acting and every one of them has recommended that I should seriously look into this field.
My Training
I took part in choir and show choir during high school where I sang as a base and learned to project my voice with clarity and resonance.
In 1990-91 I was a member of the base section in the Ohio State Men's Glee. In 1991, we toured and number of cities on the California coast.
I received a BS in Natural Resources from Colorado State University in 2001 during which I had a public speaking class in which I did fairly well.
1993-Present: Military trained communications specialist
My Studio Equipment
Aside from being recorded for a concert CD in an auditorium I have never been in an actual sound studio.
Additional Skills
I have always been fascinated by science and historical documentaries, such as shark and wildlife programs, mythology and folklore, military history, technological advances in warfare and equipment, space exploration, etc.
My military background would easily allow me to take on roles of military subjects from any era. The respect and attention to detail required to validate the film or project with the level of authenticity that would satisfy audiences with military and/or historical backgrounds is second nature to me.
