Started recording my voice as a child on my father's old tape recorder, and have done voice work ever since. It started with poetry reading and dramatic readings, church readings, and has gone on to commercials, stories, audio books and what have you. I did 2 separate characters for A&E's Titanic, End of a Dream - Ida Strauss (an old Viennese) and a NY socialite who sounded like Eleanor Roosevelt. Also have used my German accent. Theatrically I have also worked with Irish, Southern U.S. (& Texas, Cockney, British and Russian accents.
My primary teacher was my father - who studied under Prof. Grabanier at Brooklyn College in the 30's.
I then learned oral interpretation through poetry readings, bible readings, and dramatic readings (with a former radio actress in the Pied Pipers group as a teenager.)
I studied acting and voice at HB Studio in NYC, and worked in the Barnard and Columbia theatre groups, and with Isaiah Scheffer, who founded Symphony Space. There was also work with the spoken word through the Dance Theatre Workshop.
I continued with voice studies in London, and returned to the U.S. to Berkeley, where I helped found what is now the California Shakespeare Festival.
In Los Angeles, I studied at the SAG/AFI Conservatory, and did lots of work with the spoken word - poetry readings, and Celtic shows (in an Irish accent) with music and Gaelic poetry in translation. I also had a one-woman show called Wild and Witty Women, which interspersed Renaissance woman's poetry with period music.
I participated in a workshop at Beyond Baroque about creating a spoken word performance. And I have continued my voice studies with Eldon Turner as musical director of first St. Matthews Church in Glendale and then the Hollywood Lutheran Church. My church work has often utilized my vocal skills, reading biblical passages, etc. as well as singing.
Since you are interested in journalism, let me add that I have been the Cultural Editor of ESTYLO, a bilingual magazine. And I have written a lot for the web.
