My Voice Experience
At age 16, I wrote, voiced and produced my first radio commercial. My radio career began at a new station in town two years after graduating high school. I was Production Director and on-air talent until 1977 when, after having recorded two freelance narrations for them, a local producer of business communications asked me to join their staff as in-house Narrator and Audio Producer. I was narrating and producing audio tracks that were later synchronized with as many as fifteen slide projectors using then-cutting edge computer technology. Clients included a long list of top Fortune 500 companies. Because of my innate comfort with the often-times technical and/or jargon-laden scripts, clients realized my ability to deliver the material in a manner appropriate to the content and audience. Hence, they saw no need to attend recording sessions. I became very adept at making completely unnoticeable patch corrections sometimes many weeks after recording. My talent for sound design was snowballing. In 1981, I co-founded a small advertising agency geared for radio. Spots I weekly voiced and produced aired on several of the highest-rated New York City stations. In 1985s International Radio Festival of New York, I shared two Finalist awards in the writing and production categories. In 1987, I rejoined the business communications firm in the same capacity as earlier, and also became quite adept at directing video post-production sessions. My acting abilities were recently showcased when a cold-read audition landed my first-ever part in a local play. Even more recently, I spent a week in Europe recording for a major speech technology company, and provided one of two voices for an animated short.
My Training
I began early. At age 7, I developed an interest in how television was broadcast. At age 9, my interest in TV turned into a passion for radio upon becoming fixated on the now legendary WABC. In the fourth grade, I was found to be reading at the seventh grade level. I began honing my skills as audio tape editor. The seed for voice-over was planted by an exhibit at the 1964-65 New York Worlds Fair, narrated by the great Peter Thomas. From photographs and visits to one nearby, I built a mock radio station at home, where I practiced my craft.
Most recently, specific voice-over training includes sessions with and/or seminars given by: Susan Berkley, Paul Liberti, Marice Tobias, Roy Yokelson, Nancy Wolfson.
My Studio Equipment
Macintosh OS X-based Pro Tools, Bias PeakPro, Sennheiser MKH 416 shotgun condenser microphone, Focusrite Platinum Voicemaster Pro, Digi 002 Control Surface, Source-Connect, Telos Zephyr Classic ISDN codec, and Telos ONE phone patch.
Additional Skills
I am very inclined, both creatively and technically. My interest in and comfort with technology allows me to easily digest and then deliver material such as eLearning/tutorials, product launches and other corporate/industrial scripts with authority and credibility, without sounding condescending. I know how to apply the 'tell not sell' method to all my work.
Some Client Testimonials:
"When I'm looking for a creative collaborator, there's only really three simple (but elusive) things I'm looking for:
1 Creativity. 2 Enthusiasm. And, 3, professionalism.
Mike not only has all of these qualities, but he has them in such abundance that they quite literally go off the scale!"
-- Richard Fenwick, Director
Richard Fenwick Films
"Mike did a really amazing job. He was absolutely spot-on for 5 days in a row without the slightest change in pitch, voice quality and speech rate he is now known as Mike the machine Harrison within the company."
-- A European Speech Technology Company
"Mike Harrison's work is first-class. He's outright gifted and can handle an enormous range of directions, inflections and characterizations. I've twisted Mike around a wide variety of jobs from presenting business services for AT&T to selling floor tile with an authentic Polynesian accent and he's done them all brilliantly. Highly recommended!"
