Accents, Impersonations, Characters and Dialects
I am from South Dakota so my natural sound is Northern plains many announcers across the country grew up in this part of the country and now work in major markets from coast to coast. I have recorded commercials with a Southern delivery and Irish accents to them. I like to listen to accents that are not from what i grew up with so i try to similate those accents for fun at times.
My Voice Experience
I have nearly 20 years experience as a radio announcer. Radio broadcasting is a business that requires attention to how your voice sounds. From getting jobs or just entertaining and informing listeners announcers need to have a listenable delivery and be articulate. I always try to use inflections to avoid being monotone but not being overly excited. I have no idea how many radio commercials were recorded over the years but getting experience was not a problem.
My Training
In 1985 I graduated from Brown Institute of Broadcasting in Minneapolis. I trained on pre-computer equipment but was able to transition fairly well to the new technology.
My Studio Equipment
I use a mini mixer to record to a computer using a production program used by many radio stations. I use an Audio Technica 2020 microphone for voice work. After completion of projects delivery is via email or compact disk.
Additional Skills
I have left the radio business and started a job as a dispatcher which allows me to still use my vocal skills but in a different way. It is still very important to be easy to listen to and be articulate so those thing continue.
