As a movie buff, (I watch them over and over) I can quote many a line from a wide variety of films and genres, often "in character." I am always up to a challenge when it comes to vocal character performance.

My Voice Experience

As with most VoiceOver "Geniuses," my "career" began in High School, Ba-Doom-Boom Chhhhhhhh! Since it was a Parochial School, my services were in demand and I practiced my craft as surreptitiously as possible which gives my work a sense of genuineness and a You-Can't-Tell-It's-Me Quality. "He sounds so . . . LifeLike!"

Fortunately, I obtained my B.A. in English from Seton Hall University, where I learned to speak "generically," which gave me a baseline point of reference, a "zero mode" so to speak. Then, naturally, to sublimate my need to "perform," I became a teacher! Oh Snap! I honed my skills in English and Drama classes and displayed my vocal skills so my students would not fall asleep!

From Salinger to Shakespeare, I read it all, silently and aloud, strutting, but never fretting, my hour on the stage of my classrooms. "All the World's a Stage" penned the Bard, and I remain "On Stage" and "On Air" at all times, ever at the ready to evoke a burst of laughter, tears or a querulous look from my ubiquitous audience: anybody who happens to be hangin' around!

Along the way, I started out as a DJ at age 17 (really) at WAVP, Associated Voice Productions, in the early 1970's, and I was hooked. Later on in life, I became a weekend radio announcer at "KHEZ, EZ 103.3 FM," in the late 1980's, and I garnered the highest Arbitron rating among my colleagues, much to the chagrin of the station manager, who then promptly ordered us all NOT to say our names "on the air." Of course, he never missed a chance to say HIS name every quarter hour! But I didn't mind because I knew that I would speak for me and that the ratings would speak for themselves.

As a teacher of Special Education, I recorded books on tape for the students whose reading abilities were challenged, changing my voice for every character and narrator in the text. They loved it and couldn't believe it was all me and I KNOW I made a difference in their lives because of my voice. They swore I had a vast array of friends and foreigners at my beck and call.

So I started out as an amateur and soon became a professional -- meaning I got paid. Woo hoo! My voice talents came in handy as a telemarketer where I soon became the top "performer" (pun intended) in the office. When asked by the manager how I did it, I replied that I took a "theatrical" approach to my work, reading my lines (the sales script) smooth and naturally like a great actor, when I made a sales call, as if the director had called out "Action!" and then "Cut, Cut, No, No now let's do it again, and with more feeling next time" if I didn't do the scene right and I failed to "make the sale."

Actors have often said that, when it comes to creating a convincing character, you've got to "sell it." And so I did -- I "sold it," both my character, the successful "sales guy," AND the ad!

My Training

My training and education includes a B.A. in English, lots of it, with Drama, Communication Arts and Education classes thrown in for good measure. My literature background is wide and impeccable thanks to Parochial schools. My time was often spent doing both audio and video projects while in school.

My media production experience includes the production of radio spots. My interest in the Performing Arts has kept me in theaters, concert halls and performing arts centers throughout my adult life, mostly in the audience, but sometimes on stage, or backstage.

I "grew up" in the New York area and lived in the Washington, D.C. area so there were plenty of cultural venues for me to experience. I have written everything from poetry and songs, to newsletters and marketing promotions. My advertising and telemarketing experience includes ad copy design and proofreading. I became fond of reminding my clients that "White Space Sells," and "Hey, it's a business card NOT a billboard."

Took a few guitar and singing lessons here and there and have assisted with production managing in theater, concerts, and even street fairs.

My Studio Equipment

Plenty of equipment is available here at home, including various recording devices, a "voice scrambler," computerized recording and playback capability, and the "Audacity" Audio Mixer application with all the plug-ins, as well as CD and DVD players, four HUGE speakers and a high watt amp. My Skype Phone is always at hand. I have easy access to a friend's recording studio with a sound room, high quality microphones, a multi-track mixer, and a DAT recorder. I am more interested in the performance end of things rather than the technical; however, I know my way around the studio pretty well. "Check, one, two . . . Sibilant, Sibilant."

Additional Skills

Although I am a VoiceOver genius, I am only a computer expert, an "ex" being a "has been" and a "spurt" being "a drip under pressure!" So I can work a PC at least as well as a fifth grader! One of my most successful "Voice" accomplishments was as a telemarketer! It was very satisfying and lucrative for me.

As a teacher I felt like a "salesman", but as a salesman I truly became a Teacher! I also trained others in methods of improving their sales results by using their vocal skills on phone calls. My sales experience has always included superior voice skills, and my sales experience includes inside sales, outside sales, retail sales and "cold calling" to businesses and to private residences, so I ain't shy, that's for sure!

My guitar playing is first rate, (on performance level), I can sing well and have written a few excellent songs. I have played and sung in a few bands here and there just for kicks and performed at various functions from time to time. I tell jokes (sometimes the same ones over and over, much to the chagrin of my friends, but, hey, ya gotta rehearse right?) and there is nothing I love better than to surprise someone, friend or stranger, by making them laugh spontaneously.

I am reliable, dependable and I give 111% to everything I do, which is 1% more than most over-achievers! Oh, and I'm modest too. As I always say, "My Humility is exceeded only by my Ego, and vice voisa! Nyuk Nyuk!"
