Voice Description
My voice has been described as mellow, friendly, rich, and intelligent.
I was born in the mid-west (Iowa), which has given me a neutral North American accent, easily understood by all speakers of American English from coast-to-coast.
My radio experience taught me to speak very clearly, which has been a boon for my later work narrating educational films.
I also do a variety of cartoon voices.

My Voice Experience
I began my career in radio, as a DJ at WVBR (93.5 in Ithaca, NY) for two years.
Later I provided voice-over narration for a series of educational films teaching fundamentals of biochemistry, as well as for a number of training videos aimed at technicians (operating X-Ray Cryocrystallography machinery to be specific). All of these were produced by the Biology Division at Cornell University.
For three years I taught at NYU and lectured at technology seminars around the country. There's nothing like speaking to a crowd of 300 people with flaky AV equipment at hand to test one's skills at public speaking and voice control.
I have also provided voice talent for online cartoons, and I write and perform my own songs.
My Training
In college I studied Film and Communications and have always been a student of storytelling and the presentation of information, though words, sounds and images.
My first real training of my voice was while auditioning at a radio station. It took several months of practice before I was given the green light and hired. There, I had to start off with the "graveyard shift" (2AM to 6AM and holidays) but I soon advanced to earlier time slots.
After leaving the radio business I had a job for two years as an audio engineer, recording and editing several series of language-instruction tapes sold to schools around the world. In addition to learning the technology of audio production, I got a firm understanding of the subtleties of the human voice.
I've also been singing and performing for the past 10 years, and I would recommend singing to anyone looking to perfect their spoken voice. Music requires skills such as holding notes, vibrato, etc. that can be crucial elements when doing voice work.
My Studio Equipment
- Shure microphones
- Several mixers (Mackie, Pioneer, Eurorack)
- Adobe Audition
I typically record and edit digitally using Adobe Audition, which has the best noise reduction filters I've used.
- Guitars, electric bass, midi keyboard for musical projects. Also effects pedals (phaser, flanger, wah-wah), although those don't get much use now that effects are all done digitally.
Additional Skills
Although most of my work now involves online publishing of written materials, I've been an amateur and professional audio engineer for most of my adult life.
Learning the intricacies of recording, filtering, noise-compression, etc. has been fun, but also allows me to be in complete control of any audio work I perform.
