My Training
I say my voice career started at age 8, as a Chorister in the world renowned Christ Church Cathedral Choir, because while it is singing, you learn a lot about diction and projection. This was also the start of my experience with radio, TV broadcasting and recording techniques. I was also involved in many dramatic productions during my teenage years. At university, I recorded voice-over for several commercial slots for the radio station and my studies as a composer for film and TV, and the studio training and recording experience that came with it, are integral skills involved in voice over production. I continued my acting performances with roles in straight plays, e.g Bluntschli in Arms and the Man, and musicals, e.g. Samuel in Pirates of Penzance.
I studied Engineering at Southampton University and Law in London. I have worked in research for Consumer Groups and dealt with complex issues around Europe's Common Agricultural Policy.
I have worked as a Project Worker in Supported Housing, working with ex-offenders, interviewing people in prison, drug and alcohol users, people with mental illness and physical disabilities. I eventually took up managerial positions in that sector, recruiting and supervising staff, steering committee roles, taking responsibility for an entire area of housing and support services.
I have been successful as a composer for film, writing for award winning documentaries e.g. 400 Years of the Telescope for PBS and conducting the London Symphony Orchestra at Abbey Road, as well as other orchestras.
My Studio Equipment
I have Mac and PC computers and several high end sound card interfaces, RME, M-Audio, Soundscape (SSL).
I have a portable Zoom recorder and a Shure & AKG microphones.
Samples Libraries for music creation and sound design include most of the East West PLAY library.
Audio editing, mixing and recording I do in the box, using Pro Tools, Cubase, Nuendo, Logic.
Additional Skills
My writing and proof-reading skills are excellent. A critical skill developed in my Supported Housing experience was the ability to write clearly and simply, while my legal and scientific training gives me the ability to present very complex ideas, drawing out the most critical information and keeping the "waffle" down to a minimum.
I have practical experience behind and in front of the camera, setting up lighting and filming using HD and tape. Among specific filming experiences, interviews, filming poverty stricken areas in Malawi, covering the Oscars in Los Angeles.
I edit video using Final Cut.
