My Voice Experience

I have used my voice to make a living for close to 20 years. I worked as a radio disc jockey for 10 of those years. I have worked many different formats, including country, top 40 and jazz -- each of which required a different style of presentation. I produced countless commercials and conducted numerous interviews with both local and nationally recognized artists, such as Lynyrd Skynyrd. I have also owned my own party dj business. When my family started growing I began doing voice-overs for a production company in Little Rock. This lasted for several years. In that time I was the talent for spots on several different cable stations, including CNN and ESPN. One day, while filling in on a morning radio show while the regular host was sick, I was called to the office of the general manager. He ran several stations that were all located in the same building. He told me that he heard a few minutes of my show and he loved the sound of my voice so much that he offered me an immediate position on the #1 radio station in Little Rock. After a while I needed a change so I became a 911 dispatcher. I was repeatedly told that my voice was very soothing to hysterical callers and that the manner in which I dispatched the police and fire personnel was both precise and refreshing. Several years later I changed careers again and I am now a high school computer teacher. I have learned to manipulate my voice even further when working with teenagers. I need to be engaging and interesting to keep their attention, speak with authority and conviction, and carry enough professionalism so they will know my words are credible. All of the various experiences I have had have enabled me to learn how to use my voice to achieve the desired result.

My Training

I actually learned to talk in Australia, and my parents, feeling as if my accent was too strong, put me into speech therapy to lessen the effect. While majoring in broadcasting I took several voice and diction and articulation classes. The final effect was a voice with an exotic uniqueness.

Along with Broadcasting I also studied Business while in college. I have a vast knowledge of the corporate jargon. While a 911 dispatcher I became familiar with many aspects of emergency services. As a computer teacher I am quite informed about various items associated with both software and related topics.
