Script Details

Twenty-five years and hundreds of extinctions ago, a wildly improbable band of conservation renegades gathered in a garage in Santa Cruz. Distressed over the failure of timid conservation measures aimed at abating a growing extinction crisis, this team of esteemed biologists and scruffy activists began plotting the rewilding of North America.

Wildlands Network was born that day. Led by the Society of Conservation Biology’s founder Dr. Michael Soule′ and Earth First co-founder Dave Foreman, this team of activists and scientists soon spread a sobering insight throughout the conservation movement: North America’s systems of parks and other protected areas were too small and disconnected to save life on Earth. Even Yellowstone National Park could not support a full array of native species over time.

Our founders suggested the biggest audacious bold conservation goal of our time: that the ecological fabric of North America be stitched back together. They outlined with broad strokes the Eastern, Western, Pacific, and Boreal Wildways, and drafted the 3Cs conservation plan to reconnect nature within those ribbons of renewal. Connectivity made possible through wildlife corridors or wildways; core habitat areas, as in big Wilderness Areas and National Parks; and carnivores, especially the large predators like wolves, bears, cougars and Jaguar who play critical roles in their ecosystems. These species are sometimes called keystone species for when removed, entire ecosystems collapse.
