There is a special place in Athens where every citizen is welcome, though most are in no hurry to call it home. It’s where the Republican is at peace with the Democrat, Baptists are neighbor to Catholic. Jews and Gentiles share the shade and the rich share space with the poor. It’s a place where people have grown accustomed to a diversity of faces and lifestyles, where no one is judged or ignored. That place is Athens’ Oconee Hill Cemetery. Long recognized as one of the most beautiful cemeteries in Georgia. Each grave stone, each plot, tells its own story--a story that weaves a tapestry of Athens, of Georgia and America. It is a who’s who from the most notable and famous to the most impoverished citizens to ever walk the streets of Athens. There is the grandeur of mausoleums and shrines to the modesty of unmarked graves with ashes carefully sequestered in an upturned ground. Come join noted Oconee Hill Cemetery historian Charlotte Thomas Marshall as she visits some of the grave sites of the famous and infamous of Athens. Make your choice among this notable group and hear the story of their dramatic and sometimes heartwarming, sometimes tragic lives and deaths. Take this virtual tour then schedule your own person visit with family and friends and discover why Oconee Hill cemetery is called a grand outdoor museum.
