Project Main Details

Two Schools in Hillburn
Documentary about one of the most important moments in the history of Civil Rights and education in New York. It's about an event that took place in Hillburn, in Rockland County, in 1943.

It was there that Jim Crow law that forced children of color to attend a rundown, ramshackle schools while white children got to go to the nearby, new, well-equipped school was finally struck down.

Thanks to the brave efforts of the families of the 49 children who attended the school and young NAACP attorney, Thurgood Marshall, who came to Hillburn to handle the case, the practice ended and the families of children attending Brook School would be able to send them to Hillburn School. It required a strike to accomplish it and a final ruling by the New York Board of Education. This was more than a decade before Marshall would gain notoriety by winning Brown vs the Board of Education of Topeka, KS, which tore down the legal grounds for separate but equal Jim Crow laws nationwide. The methods used by Hillburn to circumvent the law were similar to the ones Mr Marshall encounter arguing other cases, including Topeka. He always felt that winning in Hillburn gave him an important understanding of how to win future cases.

The film will tell the story of what Rockland and Hillburn looked like during that time. It will look at the key participants, describe events, talk to people who recall the event, etc.

Will include interviews as well as V.O. Project will be used largely in schools for students to learn about the events in Hillburn and available on the internet.
