Safe Forklift Operation . A forklift safety checklist may be provided at the start of each shift.
All operators must obtain proper certification and supervisor approval to operate forklifts. Begin each shift with a proper inspection of the forklift before use to ensure your personal safety along with the safety of pedestrians. This inspection also ensures the proper maintenance and longevity of the machine itself.
Check all fluid levels and battery connections to ensure they are secure. Properly close and secure the engine cover and adjust the seating and steering to your desired comfort level.
Ensure light and sound signals are functioning properly. The blue light is an indicator to pedestrians that a forklift is approaching. The beeping sound indicates the forklift is moving in reverse.
Always ensure you wear a seatbelt when operating the forklift and remain seated at all times . If not fastened the lift will not start.
Travel with a secured load at all times while always ensuring you look in the direction of travel and maintain caution when maneuvering around corners.
At the end of your work shift, stop the forklift and apply the handbrake. Lower clamps or forks to the floor and ensure all controls are placed in Neutral. Remove the key and plug in the battery to recharge if needed.
Disclaimer: All forklift personnel requires certification and supervisor approval
Why do you need to inspect the forklift before each use?
Personal safety and safety of pedestrians
Step 1: Check Security
Mandatory Security Checks
Step 2: Close Engine Cover
Properly close and secure the engine cover
Step 3: Adjust the seat
Adjust the seating and steering to your desired comfort level
Review the steps above or continue
Pull the Handbrake
For security reasons, pull the handbrake prior to checking the lights and signals.
Check lights and sound signals
The blue light is an indicator to pedestrians that a forklift is approaching. The orange light indicates the forklift is in operation. The beeping sound indicates the forklift is moving in reverse.
Review the steps above or continue
Most forklifts now require the use of seatbelts before the machine will operate
Blue light indicates a forklift is approaching
As a pedestrian, watch for blue lights as there are many areas in the plant where the forklift operator has limited visibility.
Beeping sound indicates a forklift is moving in reverse
As a pedestrian, always be aware of your surroundings in the plant and listen for nearby beeping which indicates that a forklift is moving in reverse.
At the end of each shift, remember to do the following to the forklift:
Place the forklift in park, pull out the battery and sign a checkin sheet
Place in neutral and refill the fuel tank
Place the forklift in neutral, place blades on the ground, plug in battery to recharge
Choose the correct statement
End each shift with proper inspection of the forklift.
