It may be easiest to understand the foundations of the pharmaceutical industry by first examining the process of creating a drug — and although you do not need to master chemistry or cellular biology to be effective during your study in the pharma industry, it will be extremely helpful and important to have a working knowledge of the process and terminology involved.
Most of us do not give much thought as to what goes into the creation of a drug that we take, whether it is for allergies or cancer. If you think back to the last medicine you were prescribed, the reality is that it likely took more than 10 years and 2.6 billion US dollars to create that drug. Not only that, but for any single drug that goes to market, there are about 14 others that cannot clear the regulatory hurdles to make it from hypothesis to market.
The journey to get an idea to the market begins in the research and development phase.
The R&D process has two major stages. The first, the preclinical stage, is all about the laboratory, from researching compounds and their properties to creating new compounds and testing whether they are safe and effective on laboratory animals. The drop-out rate is high. If 100 compounds go into R&D at the same time, only about 65 will make it to this point. For those that still show promise, the maker applies for a patent in order to protect its idea.
Please note that you should only use the script or your recording of it for auditioning purposes. The script is property, unless otherwise specified, of the voice seeker and it is protected by international copyright laws.
