Project Main Details

The Big Book of Prison Slang
Looking for a female voice actor with a sense of humor to narrate the Big Book of Prison Slang. The print version is in the final proofs, the Kindle is already live, and we are looking for a female voice actor to do the audiobook. The actor should be able to do a sassy, and sometimes nasty, urban/ghetto voice, and also exhibit a sense of humor and sound intelligent.

Also, please note, the pay for the project is a share of the Digital Audio royalties, where the Company and the actor each take an equal share. Actor will be paid directly from Amazon. (Via their ACX service for voice actors.) Think of this as a production where the actors and the writers of the play each take an equal share of the box office receipts, and you have the right idea.

Also, when reading the definitions of the slang, feel free to improvise and add comments to enliven the text. In short, while all of the information in the definitions must be included, it is also open for you to add your own flair into the project.

About Spelling, Punctuation, and Missing Letters…

How do you spell the informal shortened version of the word “whore”? Is it “h-o”? Is it “h-o-e”? How about “h-o-’ “? Let’s face it--we don’t know. It is slang, and I’ve seen it all three ways in compiling this work. I think it should be “ho’”, but that is just my opinion. What that means is when I’ve seen it spelled different ways for the same phrase, I have tended to go with the more popular use. I have not, however, always tried to standardize the spelling of that and other words—I have sometimes allowed the various spellings to stand as they were encountered.

BONEYARD VISIT: a visit from one’s spouse or girlfriend without the children being brought along. I.e. the sole purpose of her visit is to go to the boneyard facility and engage in sex.

BONG: a device fashioned by inmates for the purpose of cooking food or boiling water. This particular device usually involves a smaller can placed inside of a larger can with a flammable material between the two. The material is then ignited and allowed to slow burn thus cooking the food in the inner can or boiling the water in the inner can.

BOOK: a book of 20 US first class postage stamps. This is the most prevalent form of currency in US prison systems, and there are businesses outside of the prison system which will permit an inmate to accumulate several books of stamps, and send them to the company for the purpose of exchanging them for real world money to be placed on the inmate’s institution trust fund books or be sent home to family members. This is normally done at a discount of somewhere between 20% and 40%. ($100 of stamps will yield back $60 to $80 of money.)

BOOKING WHAMMERS: when an inmate engages in the act of fellatio with several men over the course of a day in exchange for payment.

BOOKS: how much official money an inmate has in their institution’s inmate trust fund for purchases such as commissary items or telephone calls.
