Northeast Texas…cotton and cattle country.
Northeast Texas…Sam Rayburn country.
A farm boy from Bonham who became a major force in national politics, but never forgot nor neglected the people at home who sent him to Washington
Mr. Sam was born in Tennessee in 1882, but the family moved to North-east Texas when he was five.
He was number 8 of eleven children.
As a young man Sam was fascinated by politicians and their dramatic speechmaking. He soon decided politics and the law would be his future, and he never wavered in his determination.
Rayburn ran for a seat in the Texas Legislature as a Democrat and won – by 163 votes, marking the start of the longest law-making career in American history.
In 1912 Sam was elected to the United States House of Representatives and was reelected 23 times. He never lost an election from this point on.
