Script Details

In the heartland of America, life-changing low vision research is taking place that will impact people all over the United States … all over the world.

Located in downtown Wichita, Kansas, the Gigi and Carl Allen Envision Research Institute and its leading team of scientists and fellows are raising the standard for low vision patient care and support by investigating the functional implications of vision loss, early screening and access to treatments, optimizing rehabilitation therapies and developing accessibility technology.

Its goal to restore function to the blind and visually impaired is driven by the belief that every individual has vision, and that eyesight is not a requirement to achieving a dream.

The Envision Research Institute’s focus on low vision rehabilitation and assistive technologies sets it apart from other institutions that are primarily focused on curing blindness. The city of Wichita, itself, provided the inspiration for its work.

Within this community, there is a large and thriving group of individuals who are blind and visually impaired whose quality of life from birth through adulthood is enhanced through the Envision family of companies, which now includes the Envision Research Institute.

This group includes babies and toddlers born without sight who, along with their parents, find encouragement and hope in the Envision Child Development Center.

Older adults who think of Envision Rehabilitation Clinic staff as a second family who looks out for them.

And workers with vision loss who look forward to going to their jobs every day at Envision Industries, knowing they have access to the latest assistive technology that will help them succeed and be independent.

From these individuals, the Envision Research Institute recognized a far-reaching need to close the gap between the known and unknown when it comes to low vision clinical and rehabilitative care.

As a result, the Envision Research Institute team continues to look past today to see what can be done tomorrow to increase vision practitioners’ knowledge and promote the continued well being and health of individuals who are blind and visually impaired living in all areas of the world.

The ability to observe day-to-day activities at Envision, invite participants to take part in studies and have access to a global network of contacts in the vision care community adds a valuable layer of knowledge and resources to work being conducted in the Envision Research Institute.

As the Envision Research Institute moves forward with its purpose, it will establish the Midwest as a hub for vision-related research.

The Envision Research Institute’s postdoctoral research fellows from around the globe who have already undertaken studies on
-Depth perception in patients with macular degeneration.
-Differences in brain functioning between those who identify objects through sight and those who identify through touch.
-How to support normal development in children who are visually impaired.
-Applications to regain reading for patients with macular disease.

New treatments, rehabilitation training interventions, innovative devices and other solutions will emerge from the Envision Research Institute as we create a world that is accessible and meaningful to us all.

The applied and outcomes-based nature of the Envision Research Institute to remove functional barriers for the blind and visually impaired has earned the support of Envision’s sister National Industries for the Blind agencies.

Today, there are 4.2 million Americans and 285 million people worldwide who are blind or visually impaired. They aren’t just statistics to the Envision Research Institute.

They are the children who will one day become our leaders, patients who enjoy a high quality of life and employees who take pride in their careers.

They are the reason our goals are set high for the Envision Research Institute.

Join us as we continue to Defy Expectations.
