At PDS, we strive to understand the needs of our communities to help to improve oral healthcare, as well as socio-economic health. We are committed to service and volunteer efforts that address the immediate needs of local communities, and also offer long-term solutions nationally and internationally. We address these needs based on current trends and provide team members with individual opportunities and global initiatives to serve.
We believe that service to others is an important part of our business – companies that build a social purpose into their operations perform better over time. As part of our “We Serve Nation,” YOU make a difference!
The goal of the We Serve Nation isn’t to JUST pay you for your volunteer time, but to also provide you with additional time in your busy schedule so you can reach your personal volunteer goals. You may either serve an organization by yourself or with a team in other regional events.
We also support group volunteer activities in addition to your individual efforts. Two well-established PDS volunteer activities are Smile Generation Serve Day and the Braveheart initiative. The opportunities are endless!
Smile Generation Serve Day happens every August. The Smile Generation Family takes a Saturday and provides free dental services to the local community. Offices may choose to serve non-profits within the community, existing patients who have fallen on hard times, or anyone else they feel could benefit from free dentistry. Also on this day, support office team members may volunteer their time to local animal shelters, food banks and other neighborhood programs. To date, thousands of PDS employees have served as volunteers and PDS supported clinicians have provided patients millions of dollars in dental care.
The Braveheart initiative partners PDS with KaBoom, a non-profit established to support local communities in underserved areas. In one day, volunteers show up to transform a community and build a playground.
PDS and Smile Generation- trusted offices also partner with the non-profit Charity: Water to increase funding for clean wells in Ethiopia. Through fundraising, we have raised millions of dollars to help put a stop to the water crisis around the world. For every CEREC® CAD/CAM restoration completed and each time a patient begins orthodontics, we make a donation to the organization. One hundred percent of the donations are designated to provide clean, safe drinking water.
In 2013, PDS recognized the opportunity to further expand our capacity for service and formed the Pacific Dental Services Foundation™. The mission of the Foundation is to create opportunities to serve through improving oral healthcare locally, nationally and internationally. Separate from PDS, the Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that gains its own financial support through grants and strategic partners, as well as the PDS-supported family. Additionally, 100% of all donations go to the four major programs that the Foundation supports.
First, the Foundation assists communities in need in several notable ways. In one year alone, the PDS Foundation operated 37 mobile dental clinic events, served more than 1,300 patients, and donated dentistry services totaling more than $700,000. The Foundation also expanded its global impact through increased international outreach and development of a new clinic in Guatemala that provides dental, medical and nutritional education. Including efforts in Fiji and Ethiopia, the Foundation’s combined international outreach served thousands of patients around the world with more than a million dollars in donated dentistry.
The Foundation is also proud to accept applications for the Dr. Carolyn Ghazal Dental Assisting Scholarship Program, created to assist disadvantaged women and young adults find financial independence through education. We have partnered with Dress for Success, Jobs for America’s Graduates and the Salvation Army to support their clients who are interested in a career in dental assistaning. Throughout the program, these individuals receive mentoring and career placement opportunities.
Finally, the Foundation kicked off a new, special-needs training program in 2016 and aligned with organizations like Autism Speaks and the American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry to design a hands-on training program that teaches behavioral and environmental techniques that clinicians, dental assistants and entire office staffs can incorporate into their practices. Implemented in partnership with families and caregivers, these methods help alleviate fears, increase patient cooperation, and result in successful dental visits and healthy smiles.
At our core, Pacific Dental Services is a service organization and the Foundation is an extension of this philosophy.
PDS serves communities in different and dynamic ways, and we encourage you to participate in community volunteerism that fits you. We welcome you and invite you to add a higher purpose to your profession.
