The opioid epidemic is growing at an alarming rate. Every 24 minutes, a person dies from an opioid-related overdose .
Each year, more Americans die from drug overdoses than in car crashes, and this trend is being driven by prescription painkillers. This epidemic affects all of us – we’re losing family members, friends, co-workers and community members. It does not discriminate, racially, by gender or socio-economic background.
The crisis has hit Massachusetts and the surrounding Northeast particularly hard. In 2015, 1,531 people in Massachusetts died from an overdose, and the death rate has continued to increase into 2016.
As a community, we must take action. Now is the time to work collectively for innovative solutions that can save lives across Massachusetts and the country.
The GE Foundation in partnership with Massachusetts General Hospital, are tackling this national public health crisis head-on through an Opioid Epidemic Challenge Summit and Hack-a-thon, and we need you there.
We’re calling on all innovators – public health experts, entrepreneurs, industry representatives, engineers, designers, law enforcement and patient and family advocates...anyone that has something meaningful to contribute – to join us this September 9-11th in Boston to create innovations that will help transform opioid addiction treatment, prevention, and recovery.
During the Opioid Epidemic Challenge Summit, you’ll hear leaders and voices in the field discuss key opioid-related addiction challenges. Over the next 48 hours, you’ll work alongside a diverse community of public health, technical, business and design experts to form teams, pitch ideas and present breakthrough innovations to a panel of judges, who will award cash prizes to the winning teams to help move their projects forward to commercialization and patient impact.
Together, we’ll harness the power of innovation to help bend the curve of the opioid epidemic. We’ll educate, collaborate and motivate one another to make a difference in our communities and our country as a whole. This is the time to act - apply now to be part of the solution!
