Project Main Details
The Miracle of St. Joan of Arc Uganda had a humble beginning.
Father Simon Peter’s dream was to build a school serving the children of Mawuuki (pronounced: Ma-wu-chi). After the initial success, the project took on a life of its own and has grown beyond our wildest expectations. Truly we have been blessed by Divine Guidance. We started with faith, grew with prayer, and following the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and the generosity of hundreds; today, SJA Uganda truly reflects its motto “on fire with the spirit.” ---------------
Since laying the cornerstone in 2008, the school has grown to over 550 students, While we are predominantly Catholic, one-third of students hold other faiths. Importantly, every student pays some tuition. ----------------
From funds needed to build a well; providing mosquito nets for the prevention of malaria; and donating used shoes to help prevent foot borne illnesses; Fr. Simon Peter’s dream of building a school has come to fruition. St. Joan of Arc Uganda has developed a learning approach centered around educating the whole person. The school offers a rigorous academic program designed to prepare the children for the national “exams at the end of the 7th grade. The school teaches all subjects in English, which gives the children a decided advantage in the national exam, and is a big help in getting a job. -------
The children are also taught important life skills to help put them on the road to a better life.
In a part of the world where hunger is prevalent, they eat healthy foods. Targeted donations have allowed for them to have a playground; engage in competitive sports; and even play in the brass band.
And the proceeds from the SJA Penny Carnival have funded the purchase of 8 cows, a key component of our sustainability. Our goal is to source a large portion of our food needs locally to reduce expenses.
Our generous partners in Kansas City purchased the bus used to transport kids to and from Kampala and they also led the construction of the health clinic. Your generosity has allowed St. Joan of Arc to expand from a one-room school to 16 buildings including dorms housing 300 children; a full-time food operation, a health clinic, living quarters for the teachers, play fields, livestock pens, and land for growing trees, fruits and vegetables. --------
We are ranked in the top 5 percentile of primary schools in Uganda, and several of our graduates have received scholarships to prestigious high schools, and aspire to careers that will allow them to give back to the school, and their community. -------
We are incredibly grateful for your generosity, and with your continued support we can help these children to take great strides to a brighter future.
