They drove to Woodstock in his friend’s car and brought along a tent, blankets and some canned fruit and crackers. They pulled off into a field and set up their tent. Cars and young people were everywhere... A chain link fence surrounding the intended concert area on the hill was already torn down, there must have been 100,000 people there already!
My dad and his friend stayed on the hill and listened to Richie Havens. It started to rain that night and at some point they decided to walk back to their tent. When they found it, it had been blow over by the wind and it was full of water. My dad threw the tent in the trunk of the car, grabbed some supplies and headed back to the stage area. When it wasn’t raining they stayed outside. During the rain storms, they either put up with it or shared a tent with a welcoming host.
Woodstock was overflowing with happy people, flashing peace signs and getting down to the music. The weather conditions were bad and the hill in front of the stage was muddy. People were packed together on the hillside and, amazingly, there were no arguments or fights.
The bands that played were great – many of the best of the psychedelic era. In the areas that my dad explored, there were no concessions. No food. No water. Trucks were brought in with boxes of fruit and they parked at the top of the hill. People lined up for apples, bananas and oranges and waited patiently.
He tells me his favorite experience was bathing in a pond nearby. Everyone was naked and there was an enormous woman floating on a truck tire inner tube in the middle of the pond. Several skinny, naked men were dancing around her in circles. You could hear the music off in the distance. It was like elves dancing around a fairy queen. Far out!
My dad and his friend stayed together for the entire weekend and met loads of people. “I kid you not,” he said to me, “everyone bonded at Woodstock.” He’d never seen anything like it before or since... until Mysteryland.
The friendly people and good music, peace and goodwill vibe are shared between the two festivals – and I can’t wait to experience it.
