William Franklin, son of Benjamin Franklin. Royal Governor of New Jersey in 1762.
I was twenty one when my father took me into an electricity filled storm to witness his kite
experiment. As the illegitimate son of Benjamin Franklin I witnessed political storms no
less electrifying. My father provided a classical education for me that reinforced the lessons
of persistence and loyalty. During the French and Indian War I travelled with my father to
London and, in 1762, I was appointed Royal Governor of New Jersey. Upon my return to
the colonies my wife Elizabeth and I built a fine three story brick home in Burlington.
Later, in 1773, we moved into a Perth Amboy mansion overlooking Raritan Bay. I was held
New Jersey’s “ablest and most progressive royal governor, and its longest in office.” My
father Benjamin promoted rebellion while I worked for reconciliation. For my persistent
loyalty to the Crown rebels arrested me in June of 1776 and, after a prisoner exchange,
I lived and served in British held New York. In 1782 I departed for England, never to
see New Jersey or my father again. The legacy of the bitter divide between us was
that, at the Treaty of Paris, he refused to negotiate any compensation for property
seized from Loyalists during the war.
