Remember these points when completing the pre-task plan: • The pre-task plan should be reviewed and completed as a group with the crew performing the task. Crew participation is critical to the success of the pre-task plan. • The pre-task plan is not intended to address multiple tasks. Pre-plan one task at a time! If too many tasks are crammed onto one plan, the effectiveness of this tool is weakened. • The pre-task plan is considered “active” until completion of the task. It should be revised as needed to address any and all unexpected influences.
There are several benefits to using the pre-task plan. • Writing out the step-by-step process of a task helps make sure that no step is overlooked. • Assessing each step of a task helps plan for the proper tools, equipment, and personnel needed to complete a task. • Assessing each step of the task helps to identify all hazards associated with that task. • Identifying the hazards associated with each step helps determine the best way to eliminate or control the hazards. • Discussing the pre-task with the crew as a group provides an opportunity for the crew to discuss hazards, hazard controls, and alternate plans in the event of unexpected changes. • Using the pre-task plan can help save time, money, and YOU!
