Senior African American Male
The first time I stepped on a skateboard, I knew. I had played basketball my whole life, but instantly loved skateboarding more than basketball.
When I would get bad grades, my mom would never make me quit playing basketball. She would only take my board away. (pause) It’s like, she knew.
I would seriously think about skateboarding everyday that I couldn’t skate.
My brother and I played roller hockey back in Georgia, which helped me figure out skateboarding faster, maybe because the sense of balance.
He’s 6 years older than me and went to jail when I was 11. A 10 year sentence. My goal was to be pro by the time he got out so I can take of him and show him cool shit. When he got out, he told me “I thought you’d be pro by now bro.” Damn! That definitely hit home. I thought, I need to do this.
My greatest fear is not doing what I love. Every time I step on a skateboard, I crack a smile. It’s like day one all over again, you know. This is tight… it’s a whole different rush.
I’m leaving the nest for California. You know, I could stay here and wait for it to come to me or I could go chase it myself. I get fearful… thinking I need certain things or more money. But the best opportunities I’ve ever had came when I had the least amount of money or nothing going on.
It’s hard, but I don’t want to look back and think… should’a, could’a, would’a.
I don’t want to look back and think… should’a, could’a, would’a.
