The year is 1858. The United States is on the brink of civil war. Two of our country's finest orators are engaged in a fierce debate that will shape forever the future of the nation. Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas stage a series of public speeches while campaigning against each other for a senate seat in Illinois.
Lincoln would go on to win the presidency, abolish slavery, and emerge victorious in the most bloody civil war in world history. But none of this would have been possible without his gift for oratory.
The year is 1941. Hilter’s Axis powers have torn the world asunder. The United States has thus far remained neutral, seeking to avoid entanglement in the greatest conflict that world has ever known. But on the night of December 7th, Japan strikes Pearl Harbor, forcing America’s hand. Roosevelt will have to use the power of oratory to convince a skeptical public of the righteous path to war.
Roosevelt would go on to lead the United States on to victory over Japan and the Axis powers in the bloodiest conflict the world has ever known. But it was his gift for oratory which mobilized the will of the people, and re-established peace across the Earth.
1968. The United States has been has been torn asunder, battling conflict abroad in Vietnam, and at home in the fight for civil rights. Assassinations of Martin Luther King and President Kennedy have gutted the nation. Actor Cuba Gooding Jr is born. Then, in what seems like fatal blow, the hope of the nation, a man who fought to bring peace at home and abroad, Robert F. Kennedy is gunned down in cold blood. The task to rally the nation to soldier on would fall on the shoulders of his brother, Ted Kennedy--not with the cudgel or the gun, but with the power of oratory.
Ted Kennedy would devote the rest of his life to fighting for liberal causes and teaching the world how to party. But it was his gift for oratory in this precarious time in our nation's history that won the day.
