[Chillon is said "Shillon]
The United States has 5% of the world's population, but 25% of the world's prisoners. The total incarcerated population in the U.S. is a staggering 2.4 million — a 500% increase over the past 30 years. In 2010, the U.S. spent $80 billion on incarceration alone.
The American prison system is crippling our nation financially and crippling the human spirit of these incarcerated people, many of whom will return to prison because they don’t have the skills, means or confidence to live on the outside.
The Life University goal to maximize the expression of the perfection within believes in the potential of every human being.
In summer 2016, we are launching The Chillon Project, a degree-granting program that partners with the Georgia Department of Corrections to offer Associates and eventually Bachelors degrees to student-inmates. The Chillon Project will also offer scholarships to correctional staff so they, too, can elevate their situation, bettering their employment within the Georgia Department of Corrections.
Higher education is the only effective way to drastically reduce recidivism. With the Chillon Project, Life University hopes to transforms lives and communities by showing that incarcerated persons are first and foremost human beings with the same potential as anyone else if only given the opportunity.
