Project Main Details
This is for a piece, 5 - 6 minutes, that will kickoff the first day of a rally called the American Gospel Celebration we're putting on in Louisville, KY where thousands will be in attendance. The theme of the rally is how America needs to come back to its Christian roots and remember it's founding principles and morals that made it so great to begin with. We are working on a small budget of roughly $300 or so but are certainly open to negotiating. This piece embodies theme of the event through the portrayal of a father who has left behind a letter for his son after his passing. It is set on a ranch, where the son arrives after attending his father's funeral to the home that he grew up in and that his father lived in until he passed away. When he arrives, he finds a letter addressed to him written by his now deceased father who in life was a WWII veteran, rancher, and the Pastor of a small congregation. Over the course of the video, as we hear the voice of the father reading the letter to his son, we see that at some point, there was a falling out between the two and that the father had always wanted to reach out and reconcile with his son but never felt it was the right time. In the letter he is imploring his son to forgive him for their differences and to remember his roots and who he was raised to be. To "come home" in a sense, back to the principles and ideals that he was lovingly raised and encouraged to live by. As the son reads through the letter and has flashbacks to good memories, along with the bad ones where he mistreated and disrespected the love of his father, he begins to have a breakdown where his heart becomes broken for his father. In the end, he finds an old flag that he used to play with as a child, now stuffed away in an old chest. He takes the flag outside and raises it in front of the house in his father's honor and drives away into the sunset as a way of showing that he has found a new lease on life; a fresh start.
This piece will be shown to an older, more conservative audience, however, the goal is that it would speak to the hearts of not only the conservative, Christian type, but to someone who may, like the Pastor's son in the video, be "far from home"; has lost or has never had a sense of pride in this great nation and it's founding principles; in the sacrifices people have made and the liberties we have been afforded and the responsibility we have to cherish and to uphold the Republic and its founders' original vision.
You will be playing the voice of the father as he reads the letter to his son. The voice I'm looking for is an aged, weathered, wise, loving and gentle voice. Something an elderly man who's lived a long and good life would have. The tone and sound that I'm looking for would be something close to, if not exactly like, Harve Presnell's reading of Lincoln's letter to a Mrs Bixby from the film Saving Private Ryan. Here is a youtube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLDvVaLFqXI
You may have to copy and paste it into your web browser. Notice how his voice sounds aged and wise, caring and gentle, yet somber and, in a way, having a bit of brokenness/mournfulness to it. He's appreciating the sacrifice that this mother has paid with the lives of her sons in battle, and sympathizing with her at the same time for the pain she must be feeling. A carrying of a burden, if you will, but with hopefulness and pride for the good that the sacrifices this woman's sons will do for future generations.
I have attached to this posting, a recording of reference audio spoken over music that should give you an idea of timing and mood for this piece. The recording quality of the recording and the quality of the read is not that great, but it should give you a basic idea. Also, bear in mind that the script has been revised and altered a bit since this recording so this is not intended to be used as a reference for the actual wording and length of the script. The final script will be given to the individual that the job is awarded to at the time that he is awarded it.
