But away from the tourist attractions, Puerto Rico was earning a darker recognition: In 2012, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime named Puerto Rico one of the most dangerous islands in the Caribbean.
The year 2011 ended with 1,136 murders……52% of them directly related to drug trafficking.
Despite any efforts the government had taken, Puerto Rico’s young adults were drawn to the violence and resistant to authority.
If the voices of reason couldn’t get through to them, what could?
The voices of experience.
We believed that if Puerto Rico’s young people truly understood the the brutality of prison life, they’d be less likely to commit violent crimes.
So we approached the Puerto Rican government with an idea that had never been tried anywhere: The first campaign led by Twitter that uses real tweets from real inmates as a crime deterrent,
“FOLLOW 2 UNFOLLOW”.
