Here at FIU, your safety is our priority. With thousands of commuters driving in and out of campus each semester, it is important to follow the rules of the road.
We understand that some of you run on Miami time, but that’s no excuse to try to race your professor to class. The speed limit is 25 mph and 5 mph in the garages.
Cyclists are also responsible for following all traffic signals. When crossing the street, kindly walk your bike to the other side and make sure to always wear a helmet no matter how ridiculous you might look. There are over 50 bike racks on the 3 main campuses, a full-time bike shop, and as the campus grows and roadways expand, more bike lanes will be added.
Stay off of inner sidewalks unless you're riding whatever these things are called. Longboarding and skateboarding are also allowed as long as you're using it for transportation but keep an eye out for fellow pedestrians- you don't want to be that guy to ruin someone else’s day. And remember, no riding indoors.
If you find yourself walking around at night, a safer option may be to hop on one of our safety trams. The Panther Safety Tram Program provides escorts around campus at the MMC and BBC campuses each evening after 7pm. Call the parking and transportation customer care center to request a ride.
But if you happen find yourself in a somewhat questionable situation, there are 140 callboxes throughout MMC and BBC campuses. They are located in all surface parking lots and residential quad areas. Call boxes can be used to get immediate help, but you should probably brush up on your karate moves just in case.
