Maria runs a profitable Italian restaurant and thinks it might be time to expand. She’s been successful and has good financial judgement, but for a major business decision like this, Maria wants more clarity. She has some important questions: Should she expand? Can she afford to? How will an investment in expansion impact her cash flow? Her financial statements - the income statement, balance sheet, and statement of cash flows - have the answers. Maria wants to know what her sales trends are. Does expansion make sense? First she looks at her income statement. It explains a business’ profitability over a certain time. Sales come in. Expenses go out. What’s left is profit. The restaurant had consistent sales growth for the last three years. However, for the past two quarters, sales have been flat. Demand is still high and they end up having to turn customers away. They are at capacity. She has a bid to build a new outdoor terrace on the back. It will take two months. It’s rather expensive, but it would increase her seating capacity by 50%. Based on initial market research, Maria thinks it’s time to expand. But can she afford it?
