It means nostalgia. A relic of a bygone era; Egypt’s Belle Epoque.
It means culture.
Heart and soul.
West El Balad was once a triumph of eclectic architectural design.
Today, it looks like this.
Al Ismaelia for Real Estate Investment is tasked with restoring the classical grandeur of Downtown Cairo.
In line with their architectural restoration effort, Al Ismaelia launched a response to the gradual disappearance of the iconic shop signs, fondly remembered by Cairo residents.
Khotout West El Balad is an initiative aimed at preserving the typographical heritage of the hand-painted calligraphy that once adorned the facades of West El Balad.
To keep this heritage alive, we turned the handmade craft into digital craft: we turned signs into typefaces.
Each typeface is directly inspired by an iconic West El Balad shop sign, and painstakingly, lovingly crafted to preserve the integrity of the original.
The individual typefaces were named after an element of Downtown Cairo culture.
Arabic fonts are notoriously scarce, so the typefaces were made freely available to the public.
Local coffee shops, designers, musicians and even a newspaper quickly put them to good use.
Designers around the world adopted the typefaces as well.
And it didn’t stop there.
Khotout West El Balad will not bring back Downtown Cairo’s Belle Epoque. Nor will it rewrite history. But it does remind us that the beauty and charm of West El Balad will never be written off.
