Treasures of New York: Holocaust Memorial & Tolerance Center takes viewers to a former Gold Coast mansion where a vibrant cultural institution teaches Holocaust history, promotes acceptance, and builds bridges among diverse communities across Long Island and the region through the powerful reflections and real stories of personal survival and resilience told by local residents. The 30-minute documentary is part of a new season of premieres celebrating New York’s most meaningful locations and compelling institutions that impact culture, arts, education and community life.

Section 1: MEET WERNER REICH. HE IS AN ENGINEER, A MAGICIAN AND A JOKESTER. HE IS A HUSBAND, A GRANDPARENT AND A DEDICATED RESIDENT OF LONG ISLAND. WERNER IS ALSO A HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR WHO HAS MADE A NAME AND A HOME FOR HIMSELF AT THE HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL AND TOLERANCE CENTER OF NASSAU COUNTY. HE IS A LIVING LEGACY OF THE TRAUMA AND PERSEVERANCE OF HIS GENERATION. IT A PLACE FOR HIM TO REMEMBER AND FOR HIS VOICE TO BE HEARD. BUT THIS CENTER WASN’T JUST BUILT FOR WERNER. IT WAS BUILT FOR JACQUELINE – A WOMAN WHO WAS FIRST INSPIRED TO SHARE HER HISTORY AS A RWANDAN GENOCIDE SURVIVOR BY A DOCENT AT THE CENTER
Section 2: ALEX ROSNER WAS THE YOUNGEST ON THE FAMOUS LIST CREATED BY GERMAN INDUSTRIALIST OSKAR SCHINDLER. AS DOCUMENTATED IN STEPHEN SPIELBERG’S 1993 FILM, SCHINDLER WAS ABLE TO RESCUE MORE THAN 1000 JEWS BY EMPLOYING THEM IN HIS FACTORY. ROSNER’S FATHER, HENRY, WAS A FAMOUS VIOLINIST AND MADE AN IMPRESSION ON SCHINDLER WHILE PLAYING AT THE PLASZOW CONCENTRATION CAMP.
