(Firm and a little short) I appreciate the concern... and all your efforts... but this is all really rather unnecessary. (exasperated) Look, I’ll be candid. I have Alzheimers. Mistakes are to be expected. What happened at the performance, me not remembering where I was... it’s embarrassing, yes - but… I suppose it’s just a part of my reality now. My most prestigious days are behind me - what happened there is just… the new normal.
Swallowing the mistake. Yes. It has been hard. Ever since I was a child, my motto was always “Pain makes you worthy, perfection makes it worth it.” (escalating anger) So yes, I’ve felt guilt. Who hasn’t? Especially someone in MY position? But excessive? Erratic? My friends MEAN well, but… they simply don’t understand. They never will.
I’ve built my WHOLE LIFE in pursuit of perfection. Once you’ve experienced true perfection - nothing less will ever do. I failed the audience, I failed the orchestra, I failed myself. I failed everyone who has depended on me because I made a terrible mistake. The first, no doubt, of many to come. And there is not a DAMN thing you, me, or any of your contraptions or techniques can do about it!
(More reasonable) So… (clears throat) it’s been difficult. But surely that’s understandable? Frankly speaking, the suggestion that trauma has anything to do with this is utter nonsense. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Second Scene: Well, here we are. There is more to this fading ol’ gal than I thought.
(thoughtfully) That performance where I (trying to find how best to put it) forgot where I was… it wasn’t about the Alzheimer's. It wasn’t even about being perfect... or me as a performer.
(escalating intensity) It was about fear… Perhaps my whole career… was about fear. Fear of failure. Fear of my piano teacher as a child berating me over and over and then (the anger of the moment overwhelms her) SLAMMING the fallboard on my hands... and then fear of the mere threat of it forever after.
(reflective) It’s funny how I forgot that moment, and yet... its ghost continued to haunt me - pushing me, chasing me, really, to even greater heights... but taking its toll on my spirit all the while.
(curious and introspective) I wonder if it, too, will fade along with everything else… Perhaps the Alzheimer’s will provide that one final mercy...
