CAREER ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
VIRGINIA CARDIOVASCULAR FOUNDATION
VO: It may be hard to believe of Dr. James Cooper wasn’t always a doctor.
VO: In fact, when he entered the halls of Columbia University as a freshman, he had no idea where his fate lay.
VO: So he took a Myers Briggs personality test.
VO: The results indicated that he had no talent.
VO: So, naturally, he considered both medicine and law….medicine stuck.
VO: We know now that Dr. Cooper is anything but talentless….as a teacher, mentor, researcher, leader, husband, father and grandfather, he has made his mark on not only medicine, but the world.
VO: Dr. Cooper describes himself as a “frustrated cardiologist”….an odd statement for a gastroenterologist. But here is why - as a medical student he trained under some of the best cardiologists of our time so he became a gastroenterologist…because, he said, he was too intimidated to attempt to advance the field of cardiac medicine.
VO: If you know Dr. Cooper, you know his main focus is to teach, learn and grow. His list of accomplishments is long:
GFX: He was Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Inova for 23 of his 35 years on staff.
GFX: He helped to establish the Inova Institute of Research and Education.
GFX: He volunteered on the Fairfax County Health Care Advisory Board, Northern Virginia Community Foundation and at the Northern Virginia Mental Health Institute.
VO: So, of course, when retirement came calling in 2005 Dr. Cooper had plans to relax and reflect on his accomplishments.
VO: But he found that boring, so he went back to work - this time it was research and academia –
GFX: Developing the biomedical academic and research programs for George Mason
GFX: Developing a joint degree program for aspiring medical students at Georgetown
GFX: And creating Theronostics Health – a program designed to help oncologist tailor drug regimens for individual patients.
VO: This program is transforming cancer treatment and giving patients hope, where they had none before.
VO: Thank goodness retirement just didn’t suit.
VO: You might find it a bit surprising that there is more to Dr. Cooper than just research and medicine – I mean, how does he find the time!?!
VO: However, his biggest accomplishments lie within his family. He and his wife of 47 years, Carolyn, have four successful children and seven beautiful grandchildren. VO: Part of that brood lives in Sweden so he and Carolyn travel there every year. VO: However, after an unfortunate incident at his son’s wedding in which he said a blessing laden with Swedish curse words, his freedom of religion has been relinquished by his family.
GFX: He is a lifelong fly fisher.
GFX: He reads public policy and history novels
GFX: And he loves art museums.
VO: Dr. James Cooper is a man of many talents. But tonight he honor him as a trusted colleague, an innovator and a mentor.
Dr. Cooper, well done and thank you.
