By the time you finish watching this video 6 children will have died due to a preventable disease related to poor sanitation and unclean water.
This problem can be solved. We need new sustainable sanitation technologies and innovative approaches to improve and maintain access to these technologies.
The BioElectrochemical Sanitation Technology program or the BEST program can help accomplish this goal. We are developing technologies and engaging communities so that sanitation and water recycling can be delivered in a sustainable and cost effective way.
Here is how the BEST system works:
As wastewater comes into the system, the naturally existing bacteria attach to the specialized surfaces inside the BEST reactors.
Once the bacteria attach they begin to ‘eat’ the waste and transform it into electricity. The electricity is then used to power the system.
Because of the special relationship between how bacteria eat waste and how bacteria produce electricity, water gets cleaned faster when more electricity is produced; and the BEST system can eliminate solids from wastewater.
The treated water from the BEST system can be used for cleaning or laundry. After the water is disinfected, it can be used for drinking and preparing food.
The BEST systems are designed so that they can be scaled for community or individual use.
The BEST-community system is constructed inside a standard-sized (20’ x 8’) shipping container, which can be transported anywhere in the world and integrate with existing waste collection programs or enable new ones.
The BEST-residential system is constructed with a flush toilet, disinfection unit, water storage tank and a hand-washing station. Treated water from the BEST-residential system can be directly re-used for washing hands and flushing the toilet.
