VO:How does it all start?
With an idea ... that the police always seem to see you before you see them. Especially if you’re doing something wrong.

From that was born the idea of “Invisible Cops”.

The TV ads begin as a storyboard ...
a script with a series of pictures, to help everyone involved understand how the story will be told on film.

And when it comes time to film the PSAs, a small army of people go to work.

For this project, it was decided that the effect should be real, and actually captured in camera. So actors were hired who could stand still for a lo-o-o-o-ong time while they were painted into a scene.

And of course, artists were hired to do the painting.
Which is not a quick or easy process ...

For each scene involving the invisible cops, the position of the camera was critical. All the lines, shadows and textures must line up exactly for the illusion to work.

And there were police cruisers to be painted, too.

Of course, there’s more to these PSAs than the visual effect. Scouting for locations that look appropriately “Anytown USA” ...

.. casting and rehearsing actors ...

.. hiring actual police officers to play the part of police officers ...

.. and even shutting down streets to re-create a sobriety checkpoint.

Four nights were spent shooting ...

.. to create a series of PSAs, all built on the idea that the cops will see you before you see them.

Scene by scene, the storyboard comes to life ...

And when it’s all put together, months of work boils down to 30 seconds of television.
