Script Details

Bar mitzvah speeches are listened to out of politeness – if you’re a guest – or pride – if you’re a relative, or envy – if you’re a classmate. Expect a mandatory roll call of thank-you’s to third-uncles-thrice-removed and what not. Bet on an injection of humor from the bright young fellow. And of course, a Torah insight. What does not necessarily emerge in every bar mitzvah speech is an absolutely honest, brief but powerful life-changing message that leaves every adult in the audience genuinely inspired to a happier life. The enthusiastic baring of a bright soul far larger than its thirteen years on earth. You see, Mendel’s speech was years in the making. His audience was aware that he had been born with GSD – a dangerous disorder inhibiting the body’s ability to release glucose – and that he was no stranger to challenge. Glucose is essential to the body’s survival; it is the brain’s nourishment. To ensure a steady release of energy, Mendel received a carbohydrate drink once every four hours. During the night, this was accomplished through a feeding tube. Paradoxically, the necessity for Mendel to maintain his biological energy amplified his spiritual energy. With acute awareness of life’s fragility, he radiated positivity, joy, and gratitude to all in his orbit, shining brilliant light wherever it was lacking. Six years before his bar mitzvah, seven-year old Mendel missed just one night-time drink and slipped into a coma, sparking a prayer and charity marathon in Jewish communities worldwide. After two dreadful days, the miraculous occurred, and Mendel’s spark rebounded with greater intensity. Typical of his character, he re-entered the conscious world – singing! He then produced a video of his ordeal to inspire kids worldwide in the power of reciting prayer and psalms on behalf of others. Mendel’s audience on the night of his bar mitzvah celebration recognized his words not as a wise offering waiting to be translated into action, but as an accurate summary of Mendel himself.
